pipe cleaners + borax + food colouring + water on the boil = pretty

This version uses a pyrex jug on the stove to ensure that the solution is super-saturated because the water is still boiling when one is dissolving the borax. It also leaves the container on the stove as it cools, which ensures the mixture cools slowly, and thus the crystals form slowly, and thus they grow bigger.

Making a super-saturated solution (as one did at school with Copper Sulfate). The cunning thing with the pipe-cleaners is that (a) one can bend them into interesting shapes and (b) the fluffy/spikey surface having a large surface area encourages crystal growth on it.

While this page uses this method to make Christmas decorations, the same idea could be applied on a smaller scale to make pendants.
