Beginner Embroidery Tip: How to Separate FlossWhile I'm not intending to do embroidery, I do use embroidery floss for crocheting jewellery and for kumihimo braiding, so it's good to know this tip for when I don't want to use six strands at once.2015-04-19 19:37:00

Crocheted T-shirt RugWhat I find of note in this is the how-to-cut T-shirt yarn instructions which are part of this article. This method uses the whole t-shirt, not just the torso. This is much less wasteful than other methods I've come across.2015-04-08 04:22:00

Scrapbusting: Handmade Scrap Fabric TwineThis makes twisted rag-yarn which looks to be quite sturdy and strong, and can be made as long as you want. All you need are strips of scrap fabric, and scissors (and something to wind the twine onto). And lots of time, true, but it looks like the kind of thing one could do with half one's attention. This doesn't need two people to do the twisting. It doesn't need special methods of cutting in order to get the longest strips possible; indeed, if the strips are longer than your arms it would probably make it a bit awkward working with them. (The method looks similar to what I do to put my hair into a two-strand braid (though the twine needs more twisting).)2015-03-28 21:24:00

Fabric basketsThis covers both rag-yarn making and crocheting a basket. This yarn-making method has the added step of twisting the yarn (or double-twisting it) before it's rolled into a ball for use. This would make the yarn shorter but sturdier. The double-twist method probably needs two people, but would give the most robust yarn.2014-12-08 13:31:00

T-Shirt YarnThis is a nice clear tutorial for how to get a continuous strip of t-shirt yarn from the main body of a t-shirt. It takes advantage of the fact that one is working with a tube of cloth, so this method will work for things like pillow-cases, stockings, trousers, and socks too.2014-12-08 13:18:00

How To Make Yarn From SheetsRather than just making strips and sewing them together, make a spiral. This would also work for things other than sheets (though sheets would give the most yarn more efficiently) Then this yarn can be used for making (knit, crochet) rag-rugs.2014-12-08 12:52:00

Yarns Organizing IdeaPlastic basket with holes + knitting needle + straw = poor man's Lazy Kate. If one has long enough rods/needles, one can use the box lengthways and thus be able to accomodate taller cones. If dealing with cones, one doesn't need the straw, since the inner cone should be able to turn freely.2014-11-26 23:51:00

How to join your yarn by making a double knotVery useful yarn-joining technique. Much better than the standard square knot. Suits crochet and knitting, but not Kumihimo; the knot is still too visible.2014-08-11 15:46:00
