When I made the trivet, I wanted to use chain edges. So I used English chain stitch selvage, which creates a beautiful twisted chain along the edge. It is created with slip and purl stitches. I thought you might enjoy this knitting tip.

Tutorial for making beaded shell scallops at the start of a knitted scarf. The original pattern is from Deanna's Vintage Styles (Shell Fringe Scarf). However, one doesn't need to follow that pattern in order to use the general technique. It's a lovely way of decorating the bottom of a knitted piece.
