Cassandra and Methos; despair, repentance, penance and rebirth. This manages to get the balance between love and hate, fear and determination, without simplifying the complexities of their relationship, and still managing to end hopefully. I'm surprised it managed to pack all that in to the space.

A vividly haunting portrait of Darius caught in the French Revolution, refusing to turn away from what seems to be his fate, despite the attempts of his friends to rescue him from Paris. I was really caught up in this, even wondering at one point if this was going to be an AU with a dead Darius, but fortunately...not.

A cemetary, an unexpected grave, a flashback; Methos remembers Rebecca Horne.

This is a strong Rebecca, strong and caring, yet not a fool. Some things she sees, other things she does not. Methos here is elusive, quicksilver; selfish yet caring, truthful yet devious, wanting the good yet also tangled by bonds he can't escape. What develops between him and Rebecca is not so straightforward as love or hate, yet tastes of both. I really like the subtlety and angst of this.

This story took me by surprise, even though it shouldn't: of course, if Methos had been in the Watchers for ten years, he would have been there when Darius was killed, and he would have heard about it through the Watcher grapevine. This posits a Methos who was close friends with Darius -- with some very angsty flashbacks of Methos and Darius around WWI -- and a Methos just as desirous of vengeance for Darius's death as Duncan was; yet managing to keep in character and in canon by preventing Duncan and Methos from meeting. Good stuff.

This one follows on from "The Night Watch" as Methos tries to track down more of the Hunters and gets tangled up with unexpected obligations as some of his past catches up with him. More Methos angst, more lovely Darius flashbacks, nasty Horton, and a touch of spookiness. Cool.
