I have just finished reading "Ascending" by James Alan Gardner, which brings back the character of Oar from the first book in his series, "Expendable". It is, in fact, narrated by Oar, and that's half the fun. She is childish, vain, ignorant, egotistical, naieve, well-intentioned, and indeed, quite pretty, if one considers a completely transparent human-like being to be pretty.
It also has some revelations about Oar's people and how they became that way, which has some interesting repercussions...
