Plaits

There's something joyful about plaits.
Childlike yet straightlaced
A twirl of the head
makes them stick out like a comic helicopter
not serious at all
yet they hide
in curving neatness and solemnity,
all the more surprise
when caught up in exuberance.
Perhaps the contrast
swells the bubble
of laughing joy.
